Bible Reading & Scripture Memorization in 2017
God has ordained that the regular review of Scripture content and internalization of scriptural principles is foundational to the growth and maturity of any Christian believer. Toward that end, we are again emphasizing (1) reading through the Bible in a year and (2) a weekly Scripture memorization program.
We have two different Bible reading schedules available this year. The first follows a daily reading through three different sections of Scripture: Old Testament, Poetic Books, and New Testament. The second schedule uses a chronological order for reading the Bible. It covers all of the Bible content following the timing of when events described took place. Copies of the reading schedules are available in the church foyer.
This year we are emphasizing Scripture memorization and meditation for the Letter to the Philippians. This book has a theme of “Christian joy.” There are four chapters with a total of 104 verses. That makes for a simple two-verses-per-week pace. By reading those verses each day, and meditating on them (e.g. promises of God, commands of God, character of God, principles for Christian living and faithful service, etc.), there can be great spiritual profit. A copy of the verses for each month will be included in the church bulletin.
Each week in AWANA we remind our children (and it is just as important for adults) about the truths found in Psalm 119:9-11. “Wherewithal shall a young man cleanse his way? By taking heed thereto according to thy word. With my whole heart have I sought thee: O let me not wander from thy commandments. Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”
