Construction Progress, part 2

Construction Progress, part 2

When things finally got rolling, they got moving fast! After only one week of active construction, it is amazing what has been accomplished. And much of what was done in the first few days (HVAC work) can’t even be seen unless you go up into the attic. But you sure will be able to feel the difference. We have also had the floor cored, the framing roughed in, and the first phase of electrical and plumbing completed. Once the required inspections are completed things will be off and running again.

Spring Church Work Day

We are working together! Last Saturday was a huge blessing as so many men, women and teens invested their time and energy for our spring church work day. We had twenty-seven people show up to do maintenance on the church grounds and fix up the building. Everywhere you looked there was cleaning and organizing in process. We even had several folks ask when we could schedule the next work day (or two) to finish up tasks they wanted to help with. Wow! Thank the Lord.

It was also a unique day weather-wise. We had clear, blue sky and rapidly warming temperatures. But we also still had snow on the ground from the day before all around the building. We literally rolled up our shirt sleeves and brushed away the snow so we could rake up the leaves.

Church work days do not take the place of sharing the gospel with unbelievers or sharing God’s word to disciple fellow believers. But it can be a clear evidence of God’s working in people’s lives to serve with strength, unity and joy. It can also be a solid reminder that folks are embracing a stewardship of life by taking care of the physical tools God has entrusted to us to help carry out spiritual ministry.

I want to express a personal thank you to all those who participated. It was wonderful to serve together! Mike Aliano, Malachi Aliano, Donna Binando, Chuck Heichel, Judy Heichel, Gary Hodge, Beth Hodge, Jacob Ignacio, Lee Knauf, Pam Knauf, Amy Knauf, Larry Kupskey, Tom Peloquin, Betsy Peloquin, Alyssa Peloquin, Nate Peloquin, Andy Pierce, Mickey Ross, Chris Schmoe, Jesse Sewell, Monica Sewell, Josh Wiggins, Mark Wilson, Brenda Wilson, Angela Wilson, Jacob Wilson.

By His grace and for His glory,

Vacation Bible School 2016

VBS kids on porch 2Each summer for the past several decades our church has held Vacation Bible School. This year VBS will be held on July 18-22, Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:10 p.m. Registration begins at 8:30 each morning. Our theme this year is “Olympic Games.”

***Pictures from VBS 2016 can now be viewed on our website.***

Vacation Bible School is a great time for children from our church and throughout the community to learn about God and his gracious offer of salvation. There are also practical Bible lessons to help children with growth and maturity issues. Each day’s schedule includes rally time (singing, awards, team competition), Bible lesson, missionary story, and refreshments. This year we are also adding an outdoor group game time.

VBS kids on porch 1We would love to have your child, and their friends too, join us for Vacation Bible School this summer. Please take a few minutes to look at some pictures from last summer (see below). We also have a registration page you can use to sign up your children in advance and save time when you drop them off.

You will find a copy of our VBS 2016 flier linked here. For additional information, please call the church office at 248.628.2911, send an email to info@oxfordbaptist.net or check our website at www.oxfordbaptist.net/VBS2016.

We also operate a Teen Rally as part of Neighborhood Bible Time. The teens will meet July 17-21, Sunday through Thursday evenings from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. The theme will be “Teen Olympics.” Additional information is available on our website.

“Living Out Our Faith as Christ’s Church on Purpose!”

Themes for 2016 Scripture Memory:

  • Glorify God [Jan-Feb]
  • Making Disciples (salvation, evangelism) [Mar-May]
  • Maturing Disciples (spiritual growth) [Jun-Aug]
  • Mobilizing Disciples (service for Christ) [Sep-Oct]

Making Disciples (salvation, evangelism) [Mar-May]

MARCH (Our Salvation)

Week of March 6      We are saved by grace through faith in Christ. We are not saved BY good works, but UNTO good works.

Ephesians 2:8-10         8 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:  9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.  10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them.

Week of March 13    We are saved by the mercy and grace of Christ unto eternal life.

Titus 3:5-7                   5 Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost;  6 Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior;  7 That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Week of March 20    God sent Jesus into the world to die for our sin so we could be saved.

John 3:16-18               16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.  17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.  18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

Week of March 27    We are witnesses of the crucified and risen Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:1-4  1 Moreover, brethren, I declare unto you the gospel which I preached unto you, which also ye have received, and wherein ye stand;  2 By which also ye are saved, if ye keep in memory what I preached unto you, unless ye have believed in vain.  3 For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures;  4 And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

Neither rain, nor snow…

“Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.”

IMG_5079That makes me think of Jim Joslyn! He is definitely made of hearty Wisconsin stock! I want to thank Jim for delivering all of these food items for us today to the Baptist Children’s Home in St. Louis, MI. And thank you to all the AWANA children and parents in our church who donated food items or contributed toward the purchase of all those very large bulk food bags. I wish I could have been there to see the look on their eyes when Jim pulled in with that load!

This phrase was a translation by Prof. George Herbert Palmer, Harvard University, from an ancient Greek work of Herodotus describing the Persian system of mounted postal carriers c. 500 B.C. The inscription was added to the building by William Mitchell Kendall of the architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, the building’s architects. It derives from a quote from Herodotus’ Histories, referring to the courier service of the ancient Persian Empire:
It is said that as many days as there are in the whole journey, so many are the men and horses that stand along the road, each horse and man at the interval of a day’s journey; and these are stayed neither by snow nor rain nor heat nor darkness from accomplishing their appointed course with all speed.

FEBRUARY         “GLORIFY GOD”

Week of February 7            Glorify God because He is the source and sustainer of all things!

Romans 11:36   36 For of him, and through him, and to him, are all things: to whom be glory forever. Amen.

Week of February 14            Glorify God by being faithful when suffering for Christ.

1 Peter 4:13-14      13 But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ’s sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.  14 If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

Week of February 21            Glorify God by being faithful when suffering for Christ.

1 Peter 4:15-16      15 But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men’s matters.   16 Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

Week of February 28         Glorify God by faithfully sharing Christ and the gospel message.

2 Cor 4: 6-7      6 For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.  7 But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.

Ladies Luncheon 2015

On May 16th the ladies of First Baptist Church, along with many relatives and friends, enjoyed a delicious meal in a beautifully decorated church fellowship hall. The men of the church prepared and served the meal for the ladies. This was followed in the auditorium by special music from the ladies ensemble and a Bible challenge presented by Lynn Wiggins. The theme for the day was “The Fruits of the Spirit.”
